DIXEX is a comprehensive tool designed to visualize and quantify disaster impacts, vulnerabilities, and resilience on a global scale. This project is a cornerstone of the WDC's vision for a world disaster-free.
How to Use the Map
Select an Index: Choose from five main categories: the overall Disaster Index (DIXEX), Annual Loss, Social Vulnerability, Community Resilience, or the new Humanitarian Access Index.
Filter by Hazard: View the combined index or drill down into specific hazard types. Note: Humanitarian Access only has a combined view.
Explore & Analyze: Click on any administrative region to view a detailed popup with its specific scores across all major indices.
Export Data: Download your current map view as a high-quality PDF or export the comprehensive dataset for all regions as a CSV file.
Calculation Process
Data Collection: We aggregate 5 years of event data from trusted international sources (e.g., GDACS, ACLED, USGS, EM-DAT).
Impact Aggregation ($S$): For each administrative region and hazard ($h$), we calculate a total impact score ($S_{h, region}$) by summing the metrics of all events.
Normalization ($N$): Each hazard's impact score is normalized to a common scale (e.g., 0-1) to allow for comparison.
DIXEX Calculation: The final DIXEX score for a region is a weighted sum of the normalized scores of all hazards.
DIXEXregion = Σ (wh · N(Sh, region))
Where wh is the weight for hazard h.
Quantile Classification: Finally, all regions are ranked by their final score and classified into five equal groups (quantiles) from "Very Low" to "Very High". This process is repeated for Annual Loss, Vulnerability, and Resilience indices.
Humanitarian Access Index
The Humanitarian Access Index measures constraints on aid delivery, inspired by ACAPS methodology. It aggregates 9 indicators (e.g., violence against aid workers, bureaucratic restrictions, logistics barriers) into a single score (0-5, low to extreme constraints), assigned per region based on country-level data.
